סיום שנה

עברו כבר חמישה ימים מאז מסיבת הסיום שלנו ואני עדיין מתקשה למצוא את המילים הנכונות שיעזרו לי להתחיל לסכם את השנה.

החלטנו לעשות את מסיבת הסיום בטקס אמיתי ולא וירטואלי. התכנון המקורי שלנו היה לעשות הכל בחוץ כמובן, אבל סופה טרופית שנחתה בדיוק ביום שישי הכריהה אותנו לשנות את התוכניות ובסופו של דבר הטקס נערך באולם ענק ונפלא שנמצא בקומה התחתונה של המבנה שלנו. כמו תמיד באקטון, הלומדים/ות היו אחראים/ות על חלק הארי של התוכנית האומנותית: שני מנחים נהדרים ניהלו את האירוע והלומדים/ות עלו לבמה בזה אחר זו לקרוא ולהציג את היצירות שלהם/ן מהתקופה האחרונה. סדנת הכתיבה האחרונה שלנו היתה שירה ולכן רובם שיתפו בשירה הנפלאה שהם כתבו. אחרי סיום החלק הזה אני עליתי להגיד כמה מילים ואז קראתי לכל לומד/ת להגיע לבמה ולקחת את הדגל שלו/ה עם כל התגים שהוא/היא קיבל/ה במהלך תקופת הקורונה שבה למדנו מהבית:

היה כיף גדול לראות את כולם/ן באמת. שמרנו על ריחוק חברתי ועל מסכות כמובן, ובכל זאת, המסקנה שלי מכל התקופה הזו היא שאין תחליף לקשר הבלתי אמצעי. לראות את כל החבורה הנהדרת הזו מפטפטת ומשחקת יחד, אחרי כל השעות הוירטואליות שבילינו יחד, היתה חוויה חזקה ומרגשת.

אני משתפת כאן את נאום הסיום המלא שלי שמאוד התרגשתי להגיד אותו בלייב:

For the first time this year, I decided to prepare ahead of a real speech 🙂 I have three different groups I would like to thank today, so please find yourself a comfortable position! 🙂 

I want to start by thanking our wonderful team. Shira, who took care of all the administrative tasks this year and was also the first person I turned to whenever a dilemma came up. Jeanne, who did an amazing job with our social media with lots of hard work and creativity. Ed and Jeremy who came to the studio every week and were able to create wonderful PE and robotics & woodworking experiences for our learners. Rachel, Hadar, and Megan who came to enrich us with Drama and Yoga. And of course Ashley – who was, from the beginning, a dedicated professional, hard worker and a great inspiration as a Socratic guide.

The second group I would like to thank is our wonderful group of parents. I want to begin this with a story. A year ago, we had about 10 students enrolled and we planned to open AABC in a different location, 5 minutes drive from here. I remember I was meeting with Michael (Nina’ dad) for the first time in the studio. We had a great conversation and at the end of it, he asked me: "Do you have a backup plan for the space?" I said in a nonchalant way, "No…, but I do not think we need one; everything here looks great." Oh boy, how little did I underestimate the importance of having a Plan B! The following morning, we found out the owner did not want to rent the space to a startup school. I remember when I finished the phone call with the broker I was sure this was the end of the story…that there was no way we could miraculously just bounce back from this. I immediately called Shira and we decided to update all the parents. Those phone calls were definitely the hardest ones I have ever done in my life. I knew the market very well and I had no hope we would be able to find anything in the 5 weeks that were left til the school year was supposed to start. I remember myself calling Meeka with a real intention to give up, but Meeka made it very clear to me that I could not quit at this point because there were children ready and eager for this school to open. A day after this phone call Rycki texted me the information of Saint Mary’s and two-weeks after that, we signed the contract for the space we now have. The lesson I learned from this miracle was one I will never forget in my life. 

Dear founding parents: You took the biggest risk in trusting us with the most important thing in your life. You agreed to walk with us on this journey without any guarantees. I know how much bravery and courage this decision demanded from you and I want to thank you all for that from the bottom of my heart. None of this could have existed without your support and faith in us. Thank you. 

And last, but not least, I want to thank our learners. Since the very first day, all of you were a huge source of inspiration and pride for me. I honestly felt throughout this year that you were MY guides, versus me being yours. You always knew to give me feedback, to explain what I did wrong 🙂 … and you knew much better than me what it actually means to build a learner-driven community. Throughout the year, you created your own unique and vibrant tribe: a group of close friends that help each other, encourage each other, give each other great feedback, and also know how to contribute to the community surrounding you. In almost every daily or weekly reflection, you expressed how much you enjoyed being a part of AABC. Jazmine, Wiley, Aleks, Skyler, Finn, Shahar, Katelyn, Salish, Colin, Jade, Zohar, Nina, Tommy, and Eitan – I was truly honored to walk beside each of you this year. You are true heroes. 

אני יוצאת לשבוע חופש ואחריו אתחיל את ההכנות לשנה הבאה. אני מתכוונת לתעד כאן לא מעט מהתוכניות והדילמות שיש לנו לקראת שנת הלימודים הקרובה אז שווה להישאר, יש למה לחכות!
